What are silicone hydrogel contact lenses?

Silicone hydrogel lenses are made from a soft, flexible property that increases oxygen permeability. In fact, this type of contact lens material allows up to 5 times more oxygen to permeate through the lens to the eye than standard soft lenses. They're an ideal choice for those who wear their lenses for long periods of time, have thicker lenses as a result of higher prescriptions, work in dry-air conditioned environments, or continuously suffer from dry eyes. Plus, silicone hydrogel lenses can reduce the risk of eye infections, so going for them is a total no-brainer.

A range of manufacturers produce silicone hydrogel lenses, with popular brands including, Air Optix (Alcon), Biofinity (CooperVision) and PureVision2 (Bausch & Lomb). Additionally, you can purchase silicone hydrogel soft contact lenses to correct both myopia (short-sightedness) and hyperopia (long-sightedness), and they're available as multifocals for wearers with presbyopia and as toric lenses if you have astigmatism.

Benefits of silicone hydrogel lenses

As contact lenses cover the eye, they restrict the amount of oxygen to a certain extent, which makes a breathable design incredibly important. For many opticians, the overarching benefit of silicone hydrogel lenses is the increased oxygen permeability that reduces hypoxia-related symptoms (discomfort associated with a lack of oxygen reaching the cornea) often caused by regular soft hydrogel contact lenses. More oxygen also means that you're less likely to experience keratitis, inflammation of the cornea, caused by continuous wear.

Plus, silicone hydrogel prevents large protein build-ups - a serious win for allergy sufferers. Protein deposits, which naturally form in the tear film (a thin fluid layer on the eye), can easily transfer to the surface of the contact lens, possibly leading to discomfort and having to replace your lenses more often.

It's important to remember that before you do make a move to a new type or brand of lenses, consulting with your optician should always be the first step as everyone’s eyes react to materials differently.
